Did you know that you might benefit the church AND save taxes at the same time by making donations of stock that has appreciated in value? If you have held the stock for more than one year and it has increased in value, you can make a donation of the stock to the church and receive a charitable deduction equal to a fair market value at the time of the donation. You will not be required to pay any income tax on the increase in value.

For example, if you purchase stock for $8,000, own it for more than one year, and then donate it to the church when the value is $10,000, you will receive a charitable contribution deduction of $10,000 and neither you nor the church is required to pay income tax on the $2,000 increase in value. If, instead of donating the stock, you sold the stock for $10,000, you would have to pay income tax on the $2,000 gain and would have less money available for your donation.

If, however, the stock has decreased in value, it would be more advantageous to sell it and claim a capital loss deduction and then donate the proceeds to the church.
